Sterol 3β-glucosyltransferase biocatalysts with a range of selectivities, including selectivity for testosterone
The main objectives of this work were to characterise a range of purified recombinant sterol 3β-glucosyltransferases and show that rational sampling of the diversity that exists within sterol 3β-glucosyltransferase sequence space can result in a range of enzyme selectivities. In our study the catalytically active domain of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae 3β-glucosyltransferase was used to mine putative sterol 3β-glucosyltransferases from the databases. Selected diverse sequences were expressed in and purified from Escherichia coli and shown to have different selectivities for the 3β-hydroxysteroids ergosterol and cholesterol. Surprisingly, three enzymes were also selective for testosterone, a 17β-hydroxysteroid. This study therefore reports for the first time sterol 3β-glucosyltransferases with selectivity for both 3β- and 17β-hydroxysteroids and is also the first report of recombinant 3β-glucosyltransferases with selectivity for steroids with a hydroxyl group at positions other than C-3. These enzymes could therefore find utility in the pharmaceutical industry for the green synthesis of a range of glycosylated compounds of medicinal interest
Evolution of Second-Order Cosmological Perturbations and Non-Gaussianity
We present a second-order gauge-invariant formalism to study the evolution of
curvature perturbations in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled by
multiple interacting fluids. We apply such a general formalism to describe the
evolution of the second-order curvature perturbations in the standard
one-single field inflation, in the curvaton and in the inhomogeneous reheating
scenarios for the generation of the cosmological perturbations. Moreover, we
provide the exact expression for the second-order temperature anisotropies on
large scales, including second-order gravitational effects and extend the
well-known formula for the Sachs-Wolfe effect at linear order. Our findings
clarify what is the exact non-linearity parameter f_NL entering in the
determination of higher-order statistics such as the bispectrum of Cosmic
Microwave Background temperature anisotropies. Finally, we compute the level of
non-Gaussianity in each scenario for the creation of cosmological

Liquid racism and the Danish Prophet Muhammad cartoons

Copyright @ 2010 The Author.This article examines reactions to the October 2005 publication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. It does so by using the concept of âliquid racismâ. While the controversy arose because it is considered blasphemous by many Muslims to create images of the Prophet Muhammad, the article argues that the meaning of the cartoons is multidimensional, that their analysis is significantly more complex than most commentators acknowledge, and that this complexity can best be addressed via the concept of liquid racism. The article examines the liquidity of the cartoons in relation to four readings. These see the cartoons as: (1) a criticism of Islamic fundamentalism; (2) blasphemous images; (3) Islamophobic and racist; and (4) satire and a defence of freedom of speech. Finally, the relationship between postmodernity and the rise of fundamentalism is discussed because the cartoons, reactions to them, and Islamic fundamentalism, all contain an important postmodern dimension.ESR
Curvaton Dynamics and the Non-Linearity Parameters in Curvaton Model
We investigate the curvaton dynamics and the non-linearity parameters in
curvaton model with potential slightly deviating from the quadratic form in
detail. The non-linearity parameter will show up due to the curvaton
self-interaction. We also point out that the leading order of non-quadratic
term in the curvaton potential can be negative, for example in the axion-type
curvaton model. If a large positive is detected, the axion-type

Large Nongaussianity from Nonlocal Inflation
We study the possibility of obtaining large nongaussian signatures in the
Cosmic Microwave Background in a general class of single-field nonlocal
hill-top inflation models. We estimate the nonlinearity parameter f_{NL} which
characterizes nongaussianity in such models and show that large nongaussianity
is possible. For the recently proposed p-adic inflation model we find that
f_{NL} ~ 120 when the string coupling is order unity. We show that large
nongaussianity is also possible in a toy model with an action similar to those

Radiative Transfer for Exoplanet Atmospheres
Remote sensing of the atmospheres of distant worlds motivates a firm
understanding of radiative transfer. In this review, we provide a pedagogical
cookbook that describes the principal ingredients needed to perform a radiative
transfer calculation and predict the spectrum of an exoplanet atmosphere,
including solving the radiative transfer equation, calculating opacities (and
chemistry), iterating for radiative equilibrium (or not), and adapting the
output of the calculations to the astronomical observations. A review of the
state of the art is performed, focusing on selected milestone papers.
Outstanding issues, including the need to understand aerosols or clouds and
elucidating the assumptions and caveats behind inversion methods, are
discussed. A checklist is provided to assist referees/reviewers in their
scrutiny of works involving radiative transfer. A table summarizing the

Measurement of the t t-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The t t-bar production cross section (sigma[t t-bar]) is measured in
proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in data collected by the CMS
experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse
femtobarns. The measurement is performed in events with two leptons (electrons
or muons) in the final state, at least two jets identified as jets originating
from b quarks, and the presence of an imbalance in transverse momentum. The
measured value of sigma[t t-bar] for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV is 161.9 +/-
2.5 (stat.) +5.1/-5.0 (syst.) +/- 3.6(lumi.) pb, consistent with the prediction

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
